Okay fine you got me: I don’t think Hamas should have a table at the National Book Awards. Good thing literally no one thinks they should so it’s not going to happen!
Okay fine you got me: I don’t think Hamas should have a table at the National Book Awards. Good thing literally no one thinks they should so it’s not going to happen!
I mean, for the record, I have locked horns (((horns))) with people online who think Hamas are freedom fighters and who think Hamas have the best interests of Gazans at heart. It's crazy-making. And I do think implementing some kind of parameters or guidelines for political speech at this event would be reasonable. Not to censor speech but to ensure the event is inclusive.
Alison I hear what you are saying! I just find this preemptive action against the National Book Foundation, which does not make a habit of promoting or platforming hate speech, to be a goofy choice. The idea that someone would criticize Israel or express solidarity with the Palestinian people isn’t antisemitic, and pulling support over that possibility is certainly Zibby’s right but doesn’t do anything to help Jews or books (or the people of Gaza). Certainly if these critiques are voiced in a way that’s hurtful to the Jewish people, that is important to call out. But this feels like an attempt to narrowly define which kinds of political views are acceptable and which are not.
Having an extreme political bias that tilts one way is not free speech. If they said that there was several pro-Israel readers as well, that would a different story. It is an extreme bias and it does inflame a tremendous amount of antisemitism. Around the world. And there are new reports that are showing that the death toll in Gaza has been completely inaccurate. So many people are virtue signaling, and no nothing about the actual history. In the meantime there are countries such as Sudan, Syria etc. that are committing actual extreme genocides. But not a ward. And there are many Iranian dissidents and citizens that stand with Israel, They see it as fighting terrorists, and a democracy that they hops to live in. But the focus is on the one Jewish country in the world. There is a propaganda machine that is larger than you could possibly believe. I highly recommend listening to Louis Wellington Jr. and his realizations: https://substack.com/home/post/p-152950746?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Look, I don't like this any more than you do, but I promised over a year ago that I would reply with mockery and ridicule so here goes: I'm so glad you woke up from whatever coma you were in that you missed the entire past 14 months of news, but you should probably catch up before you start posting about current events online!
Hamas may appeal to the heart of those who long for freedom or at least believe in it, but they are a terrorist group, originally propped up by Netanyahu and funded by lots of folks who may indeed have Nazi agendas. But Hamas is not Gaza anymore than Israel is Netanyahu or Science is Fauci or the United States is Biden or Mcdonalds is food.
Alicia, you say a lot of things that are flat out non factual lies that have been proven to be propaganda by Iran and their terror proxies. I think you should be careful to substantiate your claims with data that has been fact checked. Much if your ideology is rooted in Hamas ideology…. I’m not sure you realize this.
I deeply respect the importance of sources when stating facts as opposed to personal insights and intuitions. A great thing to do is fact check the fact checkers - as you say, often there are terror proxies - and not just on one side. The news is often regulated by people with ties to various interests and agendas, so it's always good to look up their boards of directors. What agendas to particular fact checkers have? Who funds and decision-makes?
Yes. Agree Alicia. Did you know Qatar has dumped over $8billion into our American Universities over the past 20 years? Crazy. In addition, 40,000 BOTS were deployed to push anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist messaging via targeted algorithms on 10/7 and 10/8 and have continued to disseminate targeted campaigns at specific demographics.
I didn't know the exact amount, but that is alot! Bots are awful. I have received anti-semitic bot messages. AI is out of control and needs to be checked!
There are terror proxies that support Israel? Nope. The Anti-Israel propaganda has spread everywhere. To Wikipedia who just fired two editors with an extreme pro Palestine bias (but they still left all of the inaccurate information). Al Jeezerah has an extreme bias. Social media is flooded with propaganda from China, Iran, Russia, Hezbollah and Hamas. It is beyond what you can possibly imagine.
Yes. I saw this too. Actually, a different article detailing similar info. Crypto has been a great way for Hamas to avoid sanctions. As the article mentions; Iran and Qatar are the two biggest funders of Hamas.
I have read this piece and appreciate you sharing it. But it doesn not assert Netanyahu funded Hamas. It does assert that he attempted to divide and conquer between West Bank and Gaza and I agree his political strategy back fired. I do not agree with Netanyahu’s politics but I also will not allow that to distract from the real group to blame for the violence against Israelis on 10/7 and the injustice of Palestinians living in Gaza. That blame, in my opinion, falls squarely on the heads of Hamas. It is one thing to disagree with a political leader and quite another to brutally murder 1400 people and take another 240 hostage. My heart is broken for Palestinian people- especially children- caught in the middle of this war in Gaza. It is. But I do not blame the IDF for that. I blame Hamas. They shoot at civilians trying to flee and bulky civilians into staying in places that exist above their headquarters and tunnels filled with weapons. It’s disgraceful and they are brain washed to believe this is in the name of Allah which is disgraceful.
I am really less interested in blame and more in understanding and solutions. I didn't actually say Netanyahu funded Hamas - I said he propped Hamas up. And he did so at the expense of a possible two state solution, which would have perhaps averted war and brought peace. He turned down meetings with people working for peace shortly before the attacks. His behavior doesn't show a love for the people of Israel, nor a respect for human life, for children on either side. This only needs to be said because I have already asserted that I believe Hamas is a terrorist group.
Agree. However, I do believe that people who continue us to shift blame away from Hamas towards Netanyahu have a larger agenda that includes dehumanization of Jewish people and that this kind of focus is fueling hate towards Jews all over the world which I think is dangerous and has serious ramifications. Right now the world should be outraged at Hamas and their decades long campaign against Palestinian civilians and Israel and also against Peace and a two state solution. Bringing up Netanyahu is like mentioning a banana peel on an ice skating rink when someone slips and falls.
If you've read my comments thoughtfully, do you really believe I am trying to dehumanize the Jews? I am instead trying to humanize everyone, for so much dehumanization has already taken place.
I often feel so frustrated when it seems like everyone thinks their leaders are the righteous ones. Again, as always we must separate the people from those who are indoctrinating them, and it's not always easy because indoctrinated people will very likely be used as puppets by those who indoctrinate.

Perfectly stated, Alison.

You'd be surprised, Josh.
I certainly fucking would.
