Friendship Feature: Alexandra Potter's Two Novels
Learn more about SO I MET THIS GUY and ONE GOOD THING
Alexandra Potter is a mega-bestselling author in the U.K. who has two books out in the U.S. (from Zibby Publishing!) this year: So I Met This Guy . . . (February) and One Good Thing (December). She is prolific having published 15 novels in her 25+ year career. She writes perfect escapist stories—funny, whip-smart, and light, with undercurrents of deeper, important messages. We’re thrilled to be bringing her stories across the Atlantic for new readers to discover.
How did this happen? Zibby hosted Alex on her podcast to discuss Confessions of a Forty-Something F**-Up, which she loved. She then asked Alex to moderate her own book launch for Blank at Zibby’s Bookshop. When Zibby started introducing Alex to the Zibby authors present, Alex joked, “I’d love to be one of these authors!” Zibby thought she was kidding. She wasn’t. Now, she’s a Zibby author, too, with one book out and another on the way.
Alex loves writing about friendship and reinvention. As she told us: “So I Met This Guy is about the life-changing power of friendship, which I love writing about. So much is written about romantic love, but the relationships you have with your friends are often the most important and enduring. I particularly enjoy writing about inter-generational relationships.”

Not Your Typical Love Story: The Life-Changing Power of Friendship
So, I Met This Guy is the perfect, laugh-out-loud read to take on your next vacation. This fun, escapist sun-kissed story is perfect for reading on the beach, but it also has a serious message.
Maggie is a successful art gallery owner in her late forties, who falls madly in love with Theo, a film executive from Los Angeles, who has moved back to England following his divorce. After a whirlwind romance, he proposes, and they begin building a life together. But days before the wedding, he vanishes and Maggie discovers she’s been a victim of romance-fraud. He hasn’t just stolen her heart, he’s stolen her life savings, home, and self-esteem.
Flick, meanwhile, is an ambitious journalist in her twenties, working for a local newspaper and desperate for her big break, when she hears about Maggie who, having lost everything, is now living in a camper in the middle of nowhere, trying to rebuild her life. Flick realizes this story could be the one she’s looking for and together they decide to track down the con man, as he goes on the run across Europe.
As the unlikely pair take the road-trip of their lives from playing roulette in Monte Carlo, navigating the hairpin bends of the Amalfi Coast, dancing at midnight in Sicily and getting lost in the Souks of Tangier, unexpected twists, hidden secrets, and truths are revealed. Beneath the humor and adventure, this is a story about much more than finding a man; it’s about having the courage to be vulnerable, reclaiming your confidence, and finding yourself.
One Good Thing is an uplifting, heart-warming, and alternative love story that’s been described as a “must-read, turn-your-life-around hug of a book.” Set over the course of a year, it’s the story of Liv who, recently divorced and desperate for a fresh start, risks everything by leaving her life in London and escaping to a village in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales countryside to renovate a crumbling, three-hundred-year old cottage.
But mending a broken heart isn’t so easy; feeling lonely, she adopts an elderly rescue dog named Harry, who unexpectedly introduces her to a whole cast of wonderful characters, and brings new friendships, hope, and even love into all of their lives.
This is a novel about friendship, finding happiness, and living the life unexpected. How when everything falls apart, all you need is one good thing to turn your life around and make it worth living again.
